Pro-Ject Phono Box S3 B Balanced Phono Preamplifier

The Phono Box S3 B is a phono preamplifier that offers a fully balanced design in a neat, small package. Pro-Ject have packed this tiny chassis to the brim with high-end features. One of those is their new True Balanced Connection. When used in combination with a Pro-Ject turntable with a 5-pin balanced output like the Xtension 9 or Signature 10 Turntable and 5P to XLR cable, you can achieve a totally balanced connection, minimising noise and delivering a breathtaking analogue signal.

Until now, balanced connections were exclusive to the RS range of products. The Phono Box S3 B brings those features to more affordable products.

Fully Discrete and Symmetrical Gain Stage

The new Phono Box S3 B gain stage uses a fully discrete layout. A discrete circuit is composed of disparate electronic components, and individual devices. The amplifier section is built of single parts and doesn‘t use any integrated circuits! That makes for an extended and more costly design process but results in the best sound quality. The fully symmetrical gain stage can optimise the signal-to-noise ratios, feeding the semi-passive, RIAA equalisation stage with a clean signal to work on.

Are you wondering what cables you should get with your new True Balanced phono stage? Here's a simplified rundown of what I recommend.

    Connecting the Pro-Ject X2 B or X1 B turntable

The Connect It S Mini XLR > Mini XLR cable or the Connect It DS Mini XLR > XLR will both work in this connection. With the Mini XLR connection at the turntable and the Mini XLR or XLR connection at the phono stage.

    Connecting a regular turntable

The Connect It E RCA > Mini XLR cable is ideal for connecting a regular turntable to the Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3 B or the Phono Box S3 B. With the RCA connection at the turntable and the Mini XLR connection at the phono stage.

    Connection to an amplifier

If the amplifier has XLR inputs, we highly recommending using this connection (XLR > XLR). Check our our full range of XLR cables to choose the right level of product for you.

Huge upgrade from built in phono stage

Sounds fantastic. A huge improvement over the phono pre-amp in my receiver. Dialling the in the impedance etc to match your cartridge is a dream, and support for two distinct turntables allowed me to A/B my new turntable purchase. This thing seriously rocks. I don't have a balanced turntable, but this thing makes me wish that I did! Highly recommended
